Ubuntu part 2

While everyone is off buying Vista for their (new) desktops, I installed a secondary hard drive on my machine and loaded Ubuntu Dapper on it. Yes, I decided to move away from the Vista-hype and install linux. I was a bit nervous on connecting the secondary hard drive only because I’ve heard stories that people’s data on the primary hard drive just poofed away! lol Meaning disappeared maybe because they screwed something up. So thankfully mine is still intact. No data loss. No stress. Mind you I did back up my data in case I did lose my Windows XP and also made a Windows XP cd just in case I end up not having any operating system. The downside to linux is the major configuration that I have so that my hardware works. For example, my webcam doesnt work in linux. :irked: Viewing avi videos doesnt work either. Sucks.. Well I guess I will have to do the multimedia part of my pc in Windows and the developing part in linux (if I want). Also does anyone know a good program to convert flv to avi or mpg?

*haha Well, as you already know, I got Vista, too. I didn’t even know it was going to be out by the end of January so I really just wanted to buy the Sony laptop and then all of sudden you couldn’t get it without Vista on it (because it was a special offer). I really didn’t want it, because when OSs are that new usually no good will come from it. *lol But then I went and got it anyway and up till now I’m real happy with it. :)

My desktop, laptop, and server are dual core… it is fairly nice.

Vista sucks. You really have to be somewhat of a Mac fan to want to use it. After a friend from work installed it, they offered for me to come over and try it before I decided on getting it (my laptop came Vista Premium Ready), and I did not like it at all.

I keep hearing RivaFLVencoder is a good program to convert flv files over.

I’m afraid that I can’t help you with the program to convert flv’s to avi or mpgs. Hope you can find one. I’m glad that your primary hard drive is still there. That would be horrible to experience.

They can help you play AVI files, it deals with the win32 codecs, which I’m sure you can understand why they are not included by default. Also, try Automatix for multimedia codecs for mp3s and such.

They may also be able to help you with your web cam. Good luck =)

You know, I’m hearing all this stuff about Vista, and I’m curious to know what the big deal is, but since it just came out, and I’m sure it’s buggy and stuff, I think I’ll steer clear for a little while longer. Or until I have enough money for a new computer to put it on.

I’ve decided to stay away from the Vista-hype as well. Mainly because my computer is too old for it so I’d have to buy a new one :/

I’m not good with computer stuff really, but my boyfriend had linux on his computer when I moved in so I got use to it. Do you have mplayer on Ubuntu? It should play everything. I’ve never had any problems playing avi files. But we’re on an older version of linux called ArchLinux. There are some good Linux messageboards out there, Unfortunately I can’t remember the one i used, but this one looks like the same thing: http://www.linuxhelp.net/forums/ I don’t know anything about drivers and stuff to make web cams etc work.. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!

But I congratulate you on not going for Vista…Linux can do pretty much anything Windows can do…and it’s free! Go Linux!

Yeah.. everyone’s all “Ooh Vista Vista” Haha. But I don’t really enjoy.. new things at the beginning. At least your files didn’t disappear :) Yay for that.

I’ve been thinking about buying a Linux laptop. But I’m not so sure of it now :headache: It seems complicated. i think I’ll stick to Windows. It’s more user-friendly I guess. I lost all my files once too. I felt soooooooo :irked: LOL but luckily, I didn’t have anything important in my hard disk that time *phew*

    hey, i’m from rouged.
i wonder if vista is any better than the rest of them. i’m sure i’ll be making an upgrade but not anytime soon. i’ll do it once they get all the bugs out.
glad to read you got linux on the computer without damage!

    take care!

Wow, sounds complicated :P But glad it’s ok and all. Try this software – SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html). I heard that it’s a great tool. I just downloaded one myself, and it’s working great. But I haven’t try the flv part. Good luck!

What a brave thing to do! I use Videora iPod video converter, but I think it works with converting other videos as well. Good luck!

I have grown to be quite conservative with WinXP so I don’t think Vista will be located on my computer anytime soon. Actually I don’t care much about WHICH operating system I have as long as the one I do have operates :)

ahwells, i have no idea what’s the diff between programs and stuff. i don’t think an upgrade to vista will be happening with me anytime soon – waaay too much work, ahaha (:

Ouch, sucks about your configuration problems. Hope you get that sorted out. I have a program that I use all the time for converting videos. It’s freeware that I got off the internet called Cinema Forge. It’s amazing. Just tell it what video you want to convert, tell it what to convert it to, and hit encode. It only takes about 2 minutes.

Yes, so much hype with Windows Vista. I think I’ll wait it out a bit… for people to report all the bugs/problems… and for Microsoft to fix those with the first service pack fix, LOL.

Actually, I have no need (yet) for Vista, so why buy it just because it’s new and cool? I try to let need (not drool and want) determine my purchases, although I’m not always successful, LOL.

That’s cool you installed Ubuntu. I’ve been thinking about installing it, but I just never did it. I just wanted to see how it is, and if I like it. Best of luck talk to you later bye.
